From Olympic level karate athlete to career development leader, Cheryl Murphy now powers workforce readiness and professional confidence at Soulful Synergy.
As a Career Support Specialist at New Rochelle Forward, Cheryl plays a critical role in preparing individuals for real employment opportunities by helping them strengthen résumés, sharpen interview skills, and navigate clear pathways into the workforce. Her approach blends discipline, accountability, and encouragement, ensuring students are not only job ready but confident in their ability to succeed.
Cheryl’s foundation was built over 35 years of martial arts training under her instructor, Herb Wiles, who instilled in her the values of self respect, discipline, self confidence, community, and service. While she explored dance and music, it was karate that ultimately shaped her leadership mindset and lifelong commitment to giving back.
Driven by a dream of becoming an Olympian, Cheryl represented Team USA on national and international stages, traveling the world and building global relationships through sport. Her competitive achievements include being a 17 time National Team member, a five time Pan American Champion, a Bronze medalist at the Pan Am Games and World Games, a Silver and Bronze medalist at the World Combat Games, and a two time WKF Women’s Team Bronze medalist. She holds a 4th Dan in Shotokan Karate, reflecting decades of mastery and perseverance.
Today, Cheryl channels those lessons into impact beyond athletics. She is the Founder of Karate for Change, an initiative rooted in mentorship, gratitude, and community empowerment, and the author of Cheryl Murphy Lessons for Life, where she shares the principles that shaped her journey.
With a Master’s degree in Community Health Management and a Bachelor’s degree in Healthcare Business Management, Cheryl bridges elite athletic discipline with workforce development, proving that athletes do more than compete. They create opportunity, build confidence, and leave lasting legacies.
