How has being an athlete—or simply your love for sports—shaped your approach to life as a parent, professional, or community member?

JR: Being a prior athlete and current sports mom has shaped my parenting approach deeply. I am definitely more of a straight forward parent with my children. I’ve learned that teaching my children at a young age to work hard for anything they want is the best approach in life period. It’s helped them to not give up and focus more. It’s also helped me notice how to teach them to utilize their strengths and build on their weaknesses. My children also see that just because they are good in one area of life doesn’t mean they stop learning and pushing to strive for more.

What is your biggest concern for your family, both youth and adults, as they face societal pressures in sports—whether as players or coaches—while building meaningful lives within and beyond sports?

JR: My biggest concern is making sure my children are given equal opportunities in life overall but especially in sports. I push them to work as hard as they do because I know they won’t have anything handed to them as well as there is a possibility of someone being just as good or better than them.

advice would you give young athletes—girls and boys—about valuing their journey in sports and life beyond the game?

JR: Never Give Up. Keep God first in all things and remember when you get knocked down you get stronger when you get back up.
